UPPER PENNINSULA, MICHIGAN - FEBRUARY 2017: Pancake ice floats on Lake Superior next to Miners Castle February 15, 2017 in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore near Munising, Michigan. While some shelf ice had formed at the base of the cliff and pancake ice floated in the waves there was still a lot of open water on Lake Superior due to the fairly mild winter. Less then 10% of the lake had ice on it as of February 19. This also contributed to high amounts of snow in the lake effect snow belt areas. To reach the overlook in winter requires a much further hike, snowshoe or ski trip then in summer. Miners Castle Road is only plowed to Carmody Road in winter. You can park where the plowing ends and from there its about 3.5 miles to the overlook. There is an easier way of you have a snowmobile since they are allowed on Miners Castle Road. Just ride to the parking area and then its less then 100 years to the overlook. Photographer Bryan Mitchell spent a week in February wandering around to some of his favorite places in the UP to make some winter photos. (Photo by Bryan Mitchell/Special to Detroit News)
