UPPER PENNINSULA, MICHIGAN - FEBRUARY 2017: A pillar of ice forms flowing off a sandstone cliff know as "The Dryer Hose" seen from behind February 13, 2017 in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore near Munising, Michigan. Ice pillars and ice curtains form from waterfalls and water seeping from the sandstone plus melting snow to create these ice formations. This particular ice pillar is well know and popular with ice climbers. Photographer Bryan Mitchell spent a week in February wandering around to some of his favorite places in the UP to make some winter photos. Photo tip: When photographing from behind ice formations you will possibly be looking into brighter light making the ice silhouette. Use a flash or bounce a flash onto the sandstone for fill light to see the ice better. (Photo by Bryan Mitchell/Special to Detroit News)
